Is the DVD an edited version?

Ok, it's been 30 or 40 years since I've seen the movie but I loved it when I was a kid. When I started watching the DVD I thought to myself that the beginning was different. I thought it began with an old man (the Jason Webb character) in a wheel chair recounting the story. Then, while watching it, I figured I just remembered it wrongly. Then it ended with Jason Webb "finishing" the story as an old man. This makes me think that I remembered it correctly but the disc was edited. Does anyone remember it like I do?

(The Columbia film "First Men In The Moon" had a similar concept with Edward Judd as the old man)

I just watched it on Blu-ray and that beginning and ending with him as an old man in a wheelchair was definitely there.

I'm watching the DVD right now, and there is no opening scene with an old man.

I'm watching the DVD right now, too, and the beginning bookend isn't there. I guess I should have rented the blu-ray!
