Do they survive?

SPOILERS ALERT - in the classic cliff-dangling ending, involving a bus, do they survive, at all?

P.S. In today's day and age, would a smartphone help?

This was posted in General Discussion by someone else, so here goes --

... at the end, when the bus gets caught up hanging on the edge of the cliff, do they survive and get rescued or not?

Also, let's say this happened in today's day and age and some of them at least had a phone with them, would the rescue team get on time, organize themselves properly and save them? What do you think, thanks.

P.S. Its a great movie, 9/10 I DEFINITELY give it and among Caine's top 10 best ever works for sure! The 2003 remake is OK at best, but nowhere near as great as the original albeit not a total failure surprisingly either.

I POSTED IT, lol. But anyways, what do we think?

Well there was meant to be a sequel so I'm saying yes.

They're still there to this day, inching backwards and forwards to balance out so they can to get the gold.

It's truly a cliffhanger ending.

I know its a joke and all but just imagine if this was err "serious" the question that arises - how did they not die of starvation and lack of water (dehydration) literally over 50 years later?

reply

Just for fun, 'starvation' could indeed have been the deciding factor, for as the collective groups body mass lowered, they may not have had enough weight left in them to counter balance the gold.

In regards to dehydration, it's likely body heat would have condensed into water droplets on the cold metal of the bus as the temperature dropped overnight, but enough to keep them alive is anyone's guess?!

I read many years ago that the original script actually included Charlie explaining his idea and that it made sense, and then a whole other scene after that... but everyone pretty much agreed it was more fitting and just plain cooler to end the movie where they did. As to whether any of that is true, no idea.

EDIT: lol... I'll bet I was remembering this old thread from the IMDB days, a few posts down right here on pg 1:

OK, so what do we all think? Do they in any way get discovered and rescued or do they eventually fall at the end?
