Hit man?

So, other than giving some guy the hard eye followed by dropping a trunk into a body of water and the apparently emotionless behavior of James Coburn's character, is there really any evidence that he's a hit man? Granted, I'm only 40 minutes into the movie, but I'm not sure I'm going to sit through to the end.

There is (at least) a 2nd killing. You just haven't gotten to it yet.
