Ages of Hamlet and Claudius.

How off putting to see a very young Claudius and a balding, older looking Hamlet. Young Hopkins is in fact younger than the actor who played his son (Nicol Williamson). I glad Sir Anthony waited another 40 years to play King Lear.

Was anyone else bothered by this miscasting?

Yes, I agree.

Olivier was older than Eileen Herlie, his screen Gertrude, though it perhaps doesn't show so much in black and white.

Both Claudius and Gertrude are very young looking compared to Hamlet (age 30). Perhaps it was the beard Williamson sported in this production that makes him look older than Hopkins.

I have an uncle (Hopkins played Willamson's uncle, not father) who's a year younger than me, so it didn't really bug me at all--it happens. How about the actress playing Hamlet's mother; she's only a year older than Williamson!

Yeah, they're dead; they're--all messed up!

reply

I'm watching it on Antenna TV, for the first time.

I was slightly disconcerted by the similarity between Hopkins and King Rollo.
