Finding a copy

I have such wonderful memories of seeing this movie when it came out, shortly after being mesmerized by the book. Does anyone know where I can rent, borrow, buy or steal a copy? I can't really afford collector-type prices, but anything reasonable....Kenny

Like you I have a vivid memory of the film which I saw in 1970 - especially the photography and the soundtrack music which were superb. However I only saw it at a regional film theatre showing and have never found a copy of it on video or DVD (if one exists). There was a new version of the film released this year (in France anyway) but I am not sure I want to see it as it may spoil my memory of the original. If I ever track down a copy in nay format I will let you know.

Hi drsax8 and paul-kidd,

I have wonderful memories of this film, too. Fortunately, I found a DVD copy listed by a French seller at eBay, and I got it. If you visit eBay, be careful that most of the Grand Meaulnes copies listed there are of the new version of this film.

Well, I was a little bit disappointed after watching it, as you may imagine. I've made tons of screencaps from it. If you are interested in, I'd be happy to send them by e-mail.

By the way, the language is original French and there is no subtitles in the DVD.

I would be most grateful if you could email me any screencaps you have of 'Le Grand Meaulnes'/'The Wanderer', 1967 - thank you for your trouble!

Thanks,

One solution is to purchase a Zone 0 capable DVD player like this one:
Philips DVP5960 (less than US$70 at Target on line or at some stores)

Apparently it is PAL (zone 2) capable right out of the box as well, but I am not sure. I am buying one today.

Otherwise, it is apparently easy to set it up as a Zone 0 DVD - see link at:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/philips-dvp-5960/7060

You can purchase the PAL DVD of Le Grand Meaulnes from Amazon.fr (used) - see link at:
http://www.amazon.fr/Grand-Meaulnes-Fille-aux-yeux/dp/B0000A3Z9G/ref=sr_1_1/403-1359854-1668465?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1194444826&sr=1-1

There are two minor problems:
A- you must be able to understand French (no subtitles)
B- The US$ is weak, so that makes it a relatively costly purchase (shipping alone is about US$ 20)

This is probably too late for Kenny, but for anyone else looking you can buy the DVD direct from France online at fnac. Only 13 euros at the moment plus shipping...Sam

Another wonderful thing about this film is the incredible poster, very art nouveau, of a woman's face as part of the trees in a forest.

The film WAS issued, very briefly (in the 90's) on VHS by a company called Connoisseur Video, but it does not seem to have been done from a great print. It had english subtitles. I think the company had a limited catalog of films and did not have good distribution.
