Good News about the availability of this film
35 years ago, I saw Goyokin in one of the Toho theaters, which once existed to show samurai films. It was an unforgettable experience. Recently mentioned its memorability to a friend, who did a web search for it. Just finished seeing the DVD. Happy to say it fulfilled my recollections.
Some caveats:
(1) I purchased my copy of Goyokin from an e-Bay merchant ([email protected]). There's very little information on the film box and nothing but the movie on the disc. Fortunately, the transfer is very good, viewed on a year old Apple computer screen.
(2) My copy was issued by a company called Toho Video. Dated 1969 and directed by Hideo Gosha. The film's title translates as "official gold."
(3) If your search for copies of Goyokin ends with a page that says (a) the release date is 1964 and (b) the translation of the film's title is "Three Outlaws," but otherwise has the same director and lead actors, I CANNOT VERIFY THAT THE EARLIER VERSION IS IN FACT THE SAME AS THE 1969 release.
Goyokin remains one of those buried treasures of the filmmaker's art; but at least (as of this writing), there's limited access to an English subtitled import of good quality.
