Original Version UNCUT

Does anyone know where I can get the original uncut 105 min version. I have the Paramount VHS R version, which is labled 105 min R rated, but it is identical to the new DVD version, which is PG and 101 minutes. What happened to the 4 minutes?

according to a member's review at Amazon.com, the DVD version cut a lot of scenes to qualify for a PG rating. i cannot believe this kind of idiocy!
anyway, sounds like that's the discrepancy. you might want to rescreen both versions... read on:
(i'm pasting part of the the Amazon review here):

"R" rated original has been trimmed for a "PG" DVD , April 7, 2005

...The cinematography is first-rate and while the widescreen DVD showcases this, it has been inexcusably trimmed to qualify it for a "PG" rating. The DVD version is only 101 minutes long. Entire sequences have been deleted including the critical first sex sequence where birth control methods are discussed (foreshadowing) and the sequence with the rationale for his moving in with the family for two weeks. Also missing is all the vaguely graphic elements dealing with her initial refusal to have sex. If you are a first time viewer watching the DVD version and find puzzling narrative gaps in the story or incomplete motivational explanations, the trimming is the reason. The trimmed sequences are on the "R" rated VHS, so to see this as intended (widescreen and uncut) you will need to buy both the DVD and the VHS and reconstruct things.

The DVD is the same version that has been on VHS/Laser/Beta and every other format since its release-it was re-rated not edited. I dont know what that other reviewer is talking about. I've been watching this movie since the first video release back in the very early 1980s.

Uncut Version??? Wow, the untold story of the REAL uncut version was the subject of a major chapter in a book written by the film editor, Ralph Rosenblum, called "When the Shooting Stops, the Cutting Begins." Monroe Arnold played Uncle Leo. He shot a huge scene later called a "tour de force" ---BUT, it was totally cut out of the film. The director felt it was so impressive that Arnold stole the film. He showed up at the Hollywood screening and was devastated when he discovered his key scene was cut. He virtually stopped acting after that. The entire chapter on this sorry tale is below (As an actor, it confirms that films are indeed a director's medium.)

Although there are two differently rated VHS tapes out there (one labeled with a PG rating and a 101 minute running time and the other labeled with an R rating and a 105 minute running time), their contents are identical-101 minutes which reflects the trimming that was done to the original theatrical. The DVD release is this same 101 minute version.

I have never been able to locate a 105 minute version, most likely one was originally intended for the 105 minute package but was replaced (after package printing) with the re-edited version; either before release or very early in the release.

Hold on guys, I have a VHS version that has a PG rating and it is 105 minutes. I believe all the scenes are in this. It looks like the copyright on the cassette is from 1994.

reply

All I can say first-hand is that the DVD release I own is labeled PG and 101 minutes; and is missing several scenes (the most graphic) from when I saw it in the theatre. Also I once watched a PG rated VHS that was identical in content (missing the same scenes) to the DVD release.

My DVD is the PG version, and it has swearing in it, and nudity. I always wondered how in the world it could have a PG rating...

That's the one I just got from the library. I'm confused, is it uncut or not?

reply

I have the Paramount VHS version. It's listed as rated R and 105 minutes.

Wow. No offense to everyone who posted information here, but I'm more confused now than when I started reading the thread. Oh well, guess no one really knows for sure whether the original theatrical release has ever been available for purchase fully uncut...

Right. Well, I have to-- I have to go now, Duane, because I, I'm due back on the planet Earth.
