The speach 'So Goodbye Columbus...'

What was that speach the brother was listening to. I have not seen the movie in years and plan to rent it or something again, but I was wondering about that dedication speach laying on the record. Was a graduation speach? What was it and where can i hear it again? Thx

The word is speech with two e's. It's not a fruit like peach.

According to wikipedia, the title, Goodbye, Columbus refers to a record Brenda's brother listens to about his years as an athlete at Ohio State University. In those days, they'd often press phonograph records of important live events. If I had to guess, it's the football coach making a speech to the team. Or the Dean at a commencement of some kind. Or graduation. It's difficult to say, I've not watched the film in so long.

I thought it was a baskeball coach.

Yes, I was mistaken. Basketball it is.

The purpose of the speech is to emphasize that college graduation isn't the only marker for "growing up", a process many of whose steps (like the birth, blooming, and death of Brenda & Neil's relationship) have nothing to do with academia.
