Not too bad

I bought a DVD of this a few years back and this movie is not as bad as you hear it is, given you like the home alone movies and watch this with an open mind

I agree. Though this movie is aimed at kids I think I'd be entertained by Gabera. Minya isn't so bad with me.

the stock footage kind of takes a lot out of it.

I don't know-maybe it's just because I saw the american version. Whatever it is, I think this was by far the worst japanese godzilla movie. All the monsters were stock footage except for Gabera. It was as if they assumed that since it was for children, they didn't even have to try. The music at the beggining of the American version is absolutely retarded. I hope it isn't the same as the Japanese score.

Godzilla's Revenge was actually a favorite of mine as a kid because of the sheer amount of monsters in it. Now that I'm older (and have seen far more Godzilla flicks) I realize that most of the fight scenes have been pulled from other movies. This took some of the enjoyment out of the movie, but the biggest thing that hurt the movie was Minya. He is probably the most annoying character ever put into one of these movies.

That is true, but it is one of my lesser Godzilla movies, and mainly just stock footage from some superior earlier ones.

No I haven't seen every single one, but I've seen a lot of them. I'm not a Godzilla expert, but I am a fan, and Minya is my favorite monster. So I liked the fact that Minya talked in this one. There was a lot of humor in this one. I also think there was a lot going on story-wise. The whole idea of the kid taking sanctuary from his harsh surroundings by dreaming of monster island and his heroes Godzilla and Minya.

Godzilla
Godzilla vs the Sea Monster
Godzilla vs Megalon
King Kong vs Godzilla
Son of Godzilla
Destroy all Monsters
Godzilla's Revenge
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S.
Godzilla Final Wars

Those are the ones that I know I saw for sure. I think I also probably watched Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, Godzilla vs Mothra, and Godzilla vs Monster Zero when I was a kid, but I don't remember those particular ones all that well.

> [...] watch this with an open mind

I don't think that "an open mind" makes this movie better than it is. Sure, "Godzilla's Revenge" is a children's movie, but it's a very dull and uninspired one. Look at the Gamera movies from 1968 ("Destroy All Planets") and 1969 ("Attack of the Monsters"); they are much more fun. Even Japanese TV-series like "Ultraman" (1966/67) and "Ultraseven" (1967/68) are far more exciting than the overly tame and unsophisticated "Godzilla's Revenge", where the monsters are just fantasies of a small boy (a very weak plot device). There is a glimpse of social criticism to be found (environmental pollution and the situation of poor worker families), but the uneven story does not adequately support it. Overall, in my opinion "Godzilla's Revenge" is a complete failure.

I agree. This movie doesn't deserve all the harsh criticism it gets. I thought it was very cute and sweet.

This is my daughters favorite Godzilla film. I have every Godzilla film on DVD, in various versions; including the unedited version of Godzilla vs. Megalon, etc. When she first got into Godzilla's Revenge, I cringed. But after watching it 5 times a week for the past few months, it has grown on me.

I alternate between the Japanese language version and the American dub version. I would have to agree that the American version is a bit idiotic and over the top with the voices. But I know the dubbers did not listen to the original dialogue to get any kind of context. Blame the recording director and actors for the cheese.

The Japanese version is a little more serious where it does not pander to kids as much as the American version. The Japanese version treats children as importantly as it does the adults and I think that is why the Japanese version is a stronger film.

Definitely the weakest Godzilla movie but it has this likable goofy charm to it I enjoy. Plus at 69 minutes it goes by FAST.

I would tend to agree. Sure, it contains a lot of stock footage and is a cobbled-together kid's product. But it does indeed have a goofy charm. It was acceptable to me in the 70's when I was about the age to watch it, and I still like it now for its simple, warmhearted approach.
