Too much hate for this movie

As a kid I remember watching Godzilla's Revenge on TV and feeling dumbfounded and caught off guard that it was totally different than the rest of the Godzilla movies. However, it had it's own adventurous charm and provides a contrasting break from the usual kaiju story. All in all, it's actually pretty competent kid's entertainment.

So it had a misleading title, full of stock footage and it's all in a kid's mind, but so what? It does what it aimed to do and makes it a novel curiosity within a storied franchise. I took the stock footage as a "sum-up" or "revisit" in Ichiro's head. I was fascinated by its loner-against-all theme and using Godzilla as its backdrop was the icing on the cake. It's quick, cheap, fun, campy stuff.

I know most won't share my opinion of this movie. Oh well. Latchkey kids forever!

For me, I had a sudden appreciation for this movie when my nephews were very small, and I showed the movie to them. I had never liked it myself, but when watched through their eyes, I realized it was quite enjoyable "as a child's movie". So on that score, it works. And since all the monster stuff (including Minya speaking) is supposed to be a child's dream, it's not that ridiculous.

THANK YOU!!

This film was one of the first Godzilla films I ever saw (The first, being Godzilla VS Megalon) and I've always loved it. It's child-like nature is oddly comforting, and it offers a butt-load of monster fighting throughout it's scant run-time. It's completely devoid of cynicism and succeeds everything it sets out to.

I don't care what the so-called Godzilla fans say about it. It's one of the best Godzilla movies ever made. You're not a Godzilla fan if you don't love this film. The opening music (American version) is simply outstanding - it's so friggin' groovy and eerie. Ichirô's American dubbed voice is perfectly cheesy. The bullies, the bumbling bank robbers, his kinda creepy toy builder neighbor, his cobbled together radio, his dream sequences… everything is so cool and weird. Like how the plant grabs him in his dream, then changes to the robber grabbing him in real life. That's great storytelling.

And holy cow, his mom is so hot.

No, you have crappy taste and no imagination.

I'm with sjmills on this one. This is certainly in my top 5 all-time Toho Godzilla films. It's one of very few with a coherent plot, and it's so much fun to watch. I'd probably have it 4th on my list.

See, I think the stuff that isn't stock footage is enjoyable enough, but the fact that it's just filled with stock footage is kind of disappointing - those fights are much more enjoyable in the context of their actual movies. Believe it or not, Ebirah and Son of Godzilla are two of my favorite Godzilla flicks, but the footage from those films is much more enjoyable in those films when you have the context behind them.

Now, if everything was the same but the stock footage was replaced with original footage, i'd probably like it a lot more. So I guess in theory I like it, but i'd just rather watch a different one.
