Any Hope for Watkins' Movies...

ever reaching regions 1 or 2 in video release? I know the rights for 'Privilege' had been held by Universal Pictures, "the studio that hates movies(!)". I don't care how dated his films might appear. They sound like terrific material, full of original ideas we so rarely get in current movies at large. I was lucky to catch 'Privilege' on a syndicated U.S. TV station more than 20 years ago. No sign of it since.

I hope that now, three years later, you will be happy to know that many of his films are available on region 1 NTSC from New Yorker DVD. And That Punishment Park and Edvard Munch are available from Masters of Cinema region 2. You can find DVD reviews on many of these films at DVDBEAVER, if you search for Peter Watkins at their search enigine. But I dont think Privilege has ever been released on DVD.

Maybe it will...
According to Watkins' website, Universal have agreed to let New Yorker DVD release Privilege.

Quick update-Privilege has been released on DVD through New Yorker films-there's also a 5 DVD box set called The Cinema of Peter Watkins-it includes Punishment Park, The Gladiators, The War Game and Culloden on the same disc and a two disc special edition of Edvard Munch. There's also an official Evening Land DVD that was released in France-I have yet to track down a copy but have seen screenshots of the film and the picture quality is great. Watkins is in the process of getting The Journey transferred to DVD-but considering the length of the film, it will be a while before its available-On a side note-With the advent of Amazon.com running Borders out of business-Borders is sending out coupons to Borders Rewards members-membership is free you just gotta sign up for it-They are emailing 40-50% off coupons almost every week now-I took advantage of the 50% off any one item coupon and bought The Cinema of Peter Watkins Box set-I ended up paying 31 bucks with tax and shipping included-This box set is fantastic-the box is made of sturdy cardboard with a shiny gloss-the DVDs come with booklets that include articles and essays about the film-i.e. Edvard Munch comes with a 56 page booklet-The box set had to be back ordered but it was well worth the money and the three week wait!
