How did Chabrol achieve the final shot?
It looks... erm... different, i'm just wondering what he was doing with the camera.

I think he is moving the camera one way while zooming opposite, like Hitch's famous Vertigo shot, but much more subtle. Perhaps evoking the slight ambiguity of the ending, or the wax and wan of love entre les deux characteres.
Look up the term "reverse zoom".
