... in which a couple is driving their car at night and suddenly something is lobbed at the windshield and it begins to spider apart? Easily could be from another TV movie.
That sounds like "Something Evil" which was a TV movie from a few years later with Darren McGavin and Sandy Dennis. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Great flick.
