Got Any More of that Gum?

My wife and I have used this expression from the movie, whenever the other one says something that does not get our attention. Redford used it when the girl he was with was telling him of her future career plans and he obviously was not listening and really did not care what she was telling him. "Got any more of that gum?"

I remember seeing this scene in the movie theater. I was appalled at the character not listening to his girlfriend.

Self-centered: like many standout athletes.

"He sent the rain."
"Who sent the fire?"

The scene where he honks the horn to silence his girlfriend is especially telling, but I don't think self-centeredness is limited to athletes. Plenty of standout actors, musicians, writers and talented and creative people of all stripes seem quite taken with themselves. Of course, so do some untalented and uncreative people!

Didn't David realize that he had been dumped and that's why he honked the horn? He was telling her that he wanted her to spend Christmas holidays with him, but she told him that she went to visit her family and was describing it, but she also had another guy.

I thought Redford did a great job at portraying an unlikable character - one of the only times I've seen him do it, and he pulled it off very realistically.

I don't know if he's unlikable. He's just not putting up a front. I think he'd be unlikable if he were faking interest or being a calculating tool. There's probably not a lot going on mentally - but he sure looks good!

"got anymore of that gum?" Ha ha.

Redford played a very deceitful dirt bike-driving cad in Little Fauss and Big Halsy (1970). Halsy is a role he especially disliked and it's the last time he portrayed such a character since he shortly after went on to major stardom and got the power to pick only roles to his liking.

As a matter of fact, many of his earlier roles are scumbags. Check out his appearances on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in which he plays a variety of scoundrels and murderers. He also portrays a very despicably selfish character in Inside Daisy Clover (1965). All those are roles Redford was admittedly uncomfortable playing but had to as he was still a beginner yet to make his name back then.

Who is the actress in that scene?

reply

Camilla Sparv plays the European girlfriend, Carole Stahl, who wasn't very nice, eithr. At the time, Camilla Sparv was married to the producer Robert Evans.

If the American girlfriend's name was Lena, she was played by Carole Carle.

She was indeed Carole Carle.

There's another thread right on this message board in which her sister talks about it.

Rather confusingly - given that we're talking about Carole Carle trivia - the thread is headed "Natalie Wood Trivia" (which it does include also).

I liked the interview Redford gave right before the Olympics that went something like this:
Interviewer: "This is the day, how do you feel?"
Redford: "This is it!"
Interviewer: "What are your plans after the Olympics?"
Redford: (staring blankly into space for several seconds before replying) "This is it!"

Sort of reminded me of those idiot cavemen that used to show up regularly in the Monty Python sketches.

There's an interview (relatively recent, i.e. long after the movie) in which Redford talks about the movie. That scene - and the "gum" line - are the only parts of the movie he mentions specifically. Apparently he wrote the scene himself, and was pretty proud of it.

Plenty of people are self centered and don't listen to anyone tell about their lives. You don't have to be a standout athlete or artist.

The character in the movie had nothing to say about HIS own plans let alone those of his girlfriend.

reply

I bust out laughing every time I see that scene.
