Funniest way to get a woman in bed.

This is a great movie, and it's particularly humorous how Forbin schemes to communicate outside of Colossus's watchful eye by getting naked with Dr. Markham.

thank you, you just confirmed for me that this is a motion picture that I remember from my youth (wasn't sure this was the right one... but I remember that thing you describe).

reply

Don't you get the feeling that Forbin made up the entire Colossus threat so he could finally get laid?

reply

Now that you mention it, he does have a somewhat satisfied smirk on his face when he joins her in the bedroom. He didn't make up the Colossus threat but since it is there, why not take advantage of it?

This has to be the funniest comment ever posted on IMDB! Just saw the movie on DVD and concur wholeheartedly . . . Thanks!

It goes deeper than that; whoever wrote this story was clearly a 1960s ubergeek and they slipped a geek fantasy into their screenplay. No doubt about it.

reply

That's what it seemed like to me. Let's see .... the computer programmer guy looks like James Bond, his computer geek assistant is a hot babe and they are forced to have sex to save the country. I think I had this fantasy when I was 13 also.

reply

another funny way is to ask someone if they've ever seen colossus. "well, would you like to?"

childish i know

This movie makes me want to create my own all-powerful super-intelligent computer so I could score more often with the ladies.

I agree, this is pretty funny.

This aspect of the film didn't sit right with me at first, all that explaining how drinking and sex works to a computer and all, but as the film went on it made more sense. You get the impression that Dr. Markham has always had a thing for Forbin and, well, hey, Colossus could end the world anytime, so they may as well slip between the sheets before the opportunity gets away, right?

And, yeah, I think Colossus knew right from the start what Forbin was up to. And the fact that Collosus got to witness two people being human and falling in love and risking it all just makes the machine all the more monstrous in the end.

reply

I think the producers used Colossus as a way to get Susan Clark naked in back of a wine glass.

reply

An interesting question is how did Colossus know about Dr. Forbin's plan to disable the nuclear weapons and thus make Colossus only a "souped-up adding machine"? I think Colossus was somehow spying on Dr. Forbins's sex talk with Dr. Markham, and learned all his secret plans that way. Which makes Colossus a very immoral and dirty computer.

reply

I don't think that's how Colossus finds out. Colossus sees the workmen doing it. They have to take out the arming device in order to reposition the missile coordinates. They bring a container for the arming devices, of which the lid has a fake non-functioning device. The real device is detached and put into this container. Then, when the missile is repositioned, the container is rotated (turned upside down) in order to use the fake non-functioning device. Colossus sees this on the camera, but feigns ignorance of it, presumably thinking it would be a useful way to demonstrate her ruthless punishment and absolute requirement of obedience -- i.e. attempting to deceive Colossus is impossible and therefore we feel powerless, which tends to make people obedient, I'd imagine. Something like that. (Although I think understanding the thought process of an ultra-intelligence like Colossus would be like a small child or even a dog trying to understand ours.)

Sure, Colossus turned out the red light, but he still got his perv on while watching the two scientists in low light or night vision.

It made me think of the TV game show "Big Brother", in which the producers have cameras and mikes all over the set to watch the contestants 24/7. You have absolutely no privacy, whatsoever.

Now, think about being on the set for 4 to 6 weeks, and you are totally crushing on another contestant, and you're wondering if there might possibly be some place on the set where you could get away from the cameras and mikes. Do you try, and risk still getting observed?

Now what if you won some privileges for a week and you were assured by the producers that you could have some true privacy in your personal bedroom. Would you go for that roll in the hay with your squeeze, then? Or would you worry that just because the little red light went off, that still wouldn't necessarily mean that Big Brother wasn't watching?

Forbin took a big chance putting blind faith in Colossus AGAIN, like that!

Great movie and it was funny when Cleo was laughing about their circumstances, but a few points:

Dr. Forbin did not conspire to get her naked. The computer, after studying up on sex, insisted on it.

Cleo was already very attracted to Dr. Forbin. You could see it her face when he first revealed his plan for them to pose as lovers.

When he told her they had to get naked, she was cool with it. In fact, when she took her dress off, she was already braless. Cleo was also disappointed at first when Forbin did not try anything with her.

Forbin did not trick her into bed. Cleo was primed. It would more accurate to say she was the one in pursuit.

wmwithrow; to expand on your reply. The reason the affair between Forbin and Cleo was created was because Colossus would not allow Forbin to be out of camera/mic range at any time. To direct the group trying to disable Colossus Forbin needed a way of communicating with the team - hence the affair was invented.

Colossus did not "order" them into bed. After the earlier attempts to disable him Colossus was very suspicious. Therefore when Forbin told Colossus that he and Cleo were a couple they needed to really sell their affair or risk being detected and killed - plus it was probably more fun ;-)

"No , no, you're not doing it for me - you're doing it for your country, I mean the world. Yeah, that's the ticket. Do it for the world!"

They really did need a way for Dr. Forbin to communicate with "the outside world", and that was the best available option.
Drs. Markham and Forbin probably didn't think they would become lovers, or at least that wasn't the intention, but they were both likely open for the possibly initially.

Plus, two attractive people being naked in the same bed as a requisite for their plan pretty much assured that sex was going to happen sooner or later.
