Can you really do this? Wouldn't it just explode inside the barrel upon ignition? Or at least the fuse would go out whilst it is flying through the air.

And why would this strange cannon be worth money anyway.

The whole plot doesn't make sense to me.

I think it would have exploded in the barrel upon ignition. The cannon, however, is supposed to be one of Emperor Maximillian's treasures. The huge cannon in The Pride and the Passion was more impressive and apt in this regard. Charro! makes some sense, I guess, but it's too insipid and banal to matter.

The answer is yes, there was such a gun. One was used by Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish–American War for instance.
