I get the impression Visconti was trying to depict the depravity and lack of trust between the SS and SA by using the incestuous, self-destructing family as a microcosm of the rift in German society, politics--Martin supposedly representing the Nazi Party.

Seems like a lot of work for the punchline: the National Socialists were spoiled, creepy motherf###ers.
