I believe that both Harmonica and Cheyenne are supposed to be 'half-breeds', men who have been excluded from a white society that doesn't consider either of them them white enough.

They are ''designed'' to be Mexicans if we go by most other depictions of Mexicans in the Spaghetti west. I am sure you are aware that most Mexican peons are actually ''half-breeds'' (though till recently many were, in more southern regions, not even that, simply just natives who adopted Spanish and Spanish customs). In many parts of the west, although they arguable made up a majority, Mexicans were actually looked down upon as ''breeds'', due to the fact that they are generally Mestizo (which roughly means ''half-breeds''), especially by people like Travis, one of the ''heroic'' founders of Texas, who also called them ''red skins''. The use of ''brown'' for Mexicans is a modern thing that tends to distance the majority Mestizo Mexicans from their Native American cousins in the US.

I'm curious if there is a definitive answer to this. Is he Mexican or Native American? Not that it really matters one way or the other. As Elaine says on Seinfeld (concerning her boyfriend's race): "I don't need to know, it'd just be really nice if I knew."
