Does anyone know why the bee contestants all wear sailor's caps when traveling? Was that commonplace during the late 60's?

I've noticed that in Schulz's work, kids wear sailor hats when they travel and/or go to camp. Makes me wonder if this was something done in his childhood or whatever.

I thought it was for the spelling bee kids but even Linus wore one on the bus trip home.

I don't know, I wondered about that briefly as a kid, but I saw that tonight also and I was thinking how much Charlie Brown looked like he'd been drafted, which I believe is what he said he felt like, didn't he?
