This is perhaps one of the best movies ever...

I saw this once a long time ago and it was intriguing. I think it was with the Bird with the Crystal Plumage (L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo), which is also a very good and little known movie.

But I recently saw Le Boucher again and realized that this is a great film - a really really good movie. Every scene is measured and everything has a meaning. The way she smokes her cigarette during the long walk after the wedding with such an independent male spirit, the caves of the Cro-magnon drawings and the question of the beast, Balzac, the meat presented as a floral bouquet, the wedding and a funeral, the lighter, the river, sex without sex, who is really the victim - so many things. And then there's the ending. Unbelievable. Truly psychological. They keep comparing it to Hitchcock, but Hitchcock never had the intensity of these two. Way above and beyond. It's absolutely haunting.

A very haunting film indeed. I think it's my favorite by Chabrol. At least from this period. This one and Les Biches.
