regarding releases

The full version, uncut, is not available anywhere yet. However we get closer all the time, a few years ago we had to suffice with the dubbed US version.

The only DVD release so far with english subtitles are the 2010 region 2, UK,PAL, Arrow films release. It is 158 minutes long - and if the stated uncut, original lenght, is 175 - minutes, this issue lacks 9 minutes (175 film lenght via PAL conversion, 4% speedup, = 167 minutes).

There exists several other DVD-releases; all I know is that they alla are shorter but one - and all than the Arrow release lacking english subtitles.

The german DVD 145 minutes (best picture quality so far)

The spanish DVD (RsR) 112 minutes (US dubbed version, to some extent another film. Another - great - music score, and many scenes re-arranged, a mess some would say). Picture quality better than the serbian and Uk release.

The Serbian DVD (delta films). This is the longest cut avaliable; 160 minutes (missing 7 minutes that is), terrible transfer - worst avaliable, see here for your self http://www.slatkocose.org/f47/bitka-na-neretvi-19229.html.

Czech DVD 2008 Řitka Video, 105 min, dubbed US-cut

Russian DVD, probably 152

Slovakian DVD - may be uncut

Slovenian DVD

The thing is this (I have not seen the german version). The DVDs all have scenes that are not in the other issues. The Arrow DVD is shorther than the Delta; but have several scenes that are prolonged in comparison and vice versa. The US cut version (spanish release)lacks many scenes off course but also have prolonged shots missing in the other two.

If you put these releases together you would get the longest cut avaliable - but no 175-minutes!

As most of us would watch the UK version - is is in widescreen - however not anamorphic, is has the original score and is subtitled, lets use this as standard, and add the following scenes from the other releases. let me first state that the UK release in comparison to the serbian DVD have these scenes prolonged:
13.57- 14.05 (more explosions)
14.45-15.29 (More people running around)
97.49-100.08 The Neretva bridge is blown up, then Bosko tries to swim over
100.08-100.01.26 German general staff diskusses the blown bridge
1.53.18-1.58.27

These scenes are missing from the UK release:
Mercedes car driving up to the Nazi headquarter (is in the spanish and serbian dvd)
35.30 Actor Sergei Bondarchuk going from the haubitz and to a broken gun, throwing away a part of it in despair. (is in the serbian DVD)
Orson welles as chetnic leader comes out of a churh before the speech to his troops (on the spanish dvd).
57 2 seconds, intercut between the call to Lohring (Serb DVD)
57.50 Bosko jumps on a roof and then goes into, and then out of the building. (serb DVD)
95.57 Shortened scene by 20 seconds, more discussion about the typhys. Avaliable on the Serbian DVD.
101.27 several reunions are made before this scene. 55 seconds, avaliable on the Serb DVD
103.10 More action and Franco Nero is looking for his friend, 1 minute 10 seconds, avaliable on the serb DVD
105.05 Kräntzer gives more orders, 59 seconds, avaliable on the serbian DVD
105.10 More tank battles, destroying a house. 49 seconds, avaliable on the serbian DVD

Will update more later on...

One of my favourite war films and I`ve probably got five different versions of it.......Oh for a nice restored, complete, digitally enhanced, anamorphic Blu-ray with DTS.Going deep behind the lines into anorak territory but the English TV version also has an extra scene with the poet struggling over the Neretva bridge,no sign of Franco Nero`s sergeant who was supposed to be guarding him.
