What's with the ending?

I enjoyed the film, but i'm flummoxed about the end scene were the Russian commodore got on the lorry holding Topols character? What was the meaning of that? Was it a sinister indication that he was going to be shot?A mystery if ever there was one.

reply

No mystery at all. He was going to be interrogated, tortured until he confessed to being a deserter then shot.

I saw this movie about 1970 when I was in the Navy. I was not as aware of plots and sub plots then so I usually watched movies for what was happening. I remember really ejoying it until the very end when Topol was double crossed and sent back to Russia. I know that happened a lot then and Stalin "punished" anyone who was captured or got caught in the wrong place when the war ended. I think one of the reasons in his warped mind was that he did not want people running around in Russia who saw how much things, even in that time, were better outside of Russia. If I remember it, Topol had been promised by the British that he would not be returned to Russia but I get the impression that they never intended to keep that promise. As Sherman said, "War is hell".

yeah it was a very downbeat but well done, 70's style ending, the final scene with anna and hurt was very well played I though as well

This was of course before the facts about the Victims of Yalta were widely known.
