Christopher Plummer's character...

What did you think?
Personally I thought he did nothing but moan and complain the entire film to his wife and it kind of hurt the flow. Still enjoyed the movie as the flight scenes were fantastic.

He's living on his nerves from the start and steadily wilts under the strain. It's a counterpoint to his wife's ambivalence to being his wife when she is also an Air Force officer. It isn't until she sees how frightened he is at the hotel when bombs start dropping that she realises that he needs her, rather than him being a bit of a git about her conflict of loyalty.

I think the idea was to show a human face to the war, in this case how the war and their respective jobs, caused difficulties to their marriage. IMO, one of the less successful parts of the film.🐭

Susanna York's character should have been deported to Germany to jolly the soldiers along.
She was totally extraneous to the movie, and entirely out of place.
She was a nice bit of skirt but even Plummer came up empty.

The Plummer/York romance scenes were a bid to get women interested in coming to the theater with their husbands or boyfriends. They were the weakest part of the film, which would have been fifteen or twenty minutes shorter and a lot stronger without them.
