The book had a curious history according to Fish who also wrote a series of Sherlock Holmes parodies for EQMM. Sinclair Lewis sold the idea to Jack London who died before he could finish it. Years later picked it up and threw out London's notes. He then completed the story. If my memory serves me right, he also indicates where London left off and he picked up.

One bizarre touch in the movie. The journalist in the book undergoes a sex change and becomes Diana Rigg's feminist. But then Alistair MacLean did the same thing in his sequel to THE GUNS OF NAVARONE.

Garson Kanin's comment on such changes re HIS GIRL FRIDAY, when he appeared at the AFI in DC years ago was it changes the whole concept of the story.
