The French Resistance Film?

Just curious. Any opinions of how this 'Resistance' film stacks up with others?
Of course, Melville's film I think is certainly up there with the best. But arguably can it perhaps be THE best? Thanks ahead for your input.

The only film I can think that comes close is "Pan's Labyrinth".

Pan's Labyrinth was not about the French Resistance; it took place in Spain after the Spanish Civil War (though I suppose the remaining Republican loyalists were similar to the French Resistance fighters).

See here for a list of movies etc. that deal with the Resistance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Resistance#Legacy

I know. But the OP wrote:

It didn't sound specific to the French resistance to me.

...plus it features the best animated skeleton army this side of Jason and the Argonauts. Still, I prefer the seriousness of the first instalment, without this whole chainsaw-arm nonsense.

Missed Lino Ventura's cameo in this: was he one of the deadites?
