For an official release of "The April Fools", one would have to lobby, pester and cajole Paramount Home Video as they have the rights to all the films from the film production company (now defunct), Cinema Centre Films.

Two of their most famous titles that came out on Paramount DVD were "A Man Called Horse" and "Big Jake".

One of the theories I have is that the movie hasn't come out on dvd because of rights issues, perhaps pertaining to a couple of Bacharach/David songs on the soundtrack as well as the 1968/69 songs from many artists including Taj Mahal (the only one that comes to mind at the moment).

If one has the original motion picture soundtrack on Columbia Records, you will know the lineup of artists involved. Another reason I feel my theory is correct is the mere fact that this very soundtrack album has never even been released on cd -- and the movie itself came out on CBS-Fox Video worldwide around 1986 (in a pan and scanned print), and not seen since.

Whoever owns the rights these days, pay the songwriters/record companies their dues and get this movie out -- or Barbara-Jo Wilkerson will be on to you....

The DVD is now available on the Small Screen. Unfortunately, it says Full Screen, not Wide Screen. I ordered one; will wait and see...

The Small Screen version I fear is a dupe of the vhs version: if it is full screen, panned and scanned, it will be a print made for home video, most likely the same transfer from the mid-80s. You would be better off holding out for the official release, but if you can't wait that long....

You may be heartened to know that Sony Music in Japan have given the original motion picture soundtrack a 24-bit remastering and was released in March this year on cd as part of a major reissue on cd of the works of Percy Faith and his Orchestra. You can now pick it up on Amazon and a few other online retailers.

The soundtrack is the complete 1969 version, with dialogue from the movie with Jack Lemmon, Catherine Deneuve and Peter Lawford and all the songs from the movie by the original artists: Taj Mahal, The Chambers Brothers, Robert John, Mongo Santamaria--the one glaring omission is the title track sung by Dionne Warwick and produced and arranged by Burt Bacharach: it is included in the movie but wasn't on the original soundtrack album. Instead we have the version by Percy Faith (twice) and sadly it's not a patch on the Dionne Warwick version which is included on many of her greatest hits cds.

Thanks for the info, Ill look into it, Ill probably wait for the official release. Not many compare to Warwick IMO

This is one of my favorite movies ever. I saw it 4 times the first year it came out (I was single and in love with love). I desperately want to see it again. I hope it doesn't disappoint now that I'm old and know what real life is all about.

You'll like it more.

recently purchased a copy from modcinema.com, great film... they also carry a Clive Donner film called "Luv" which stars Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, and Elaine May, highly recommended!

I purchased an April Fools DVD from modcinema.com, unfortunately it is full screen but it is otherwise good quality, don't know where else I would have found it as I don't have a VHS machine.
