I am not quite sure what is the relevance of the "Madam" being a fan of Mussolini (and Federico's pretending to be one as well - to gain her confidence, evidently).

At least it makes sense.
But if that is the case, then it should have been made somewhat more clear for the viewer... And I keep having this impression that maybe it WAS supposed to be a stab at fascism, perceived as still rampant among the "high circles" of Italian society at the time (and maybe even today - but I digress).
