Costume Designer-Margaret Furse.

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about Ms. Furse? Very little info is out there for her and I would really like to know more. Anyone know about her design sketches for this film or any of her others? Are they in a museum, private collection, thrown away or what. I love the costumes for this movie and they deservidly won the "Oscar".

I'm almost certain she's the designer for Mary, Queen of Scots. (Which you might have already known.) It's a very enjoyable movie, but I prefer Anne of the Thousand Days.

When I vacationed in England in 1986, I went to hever Castle. They had a display of costumed mannequins there, which I swear were wearing some of the film's costumes. I could barely pull myself away from it. I loved the costumes in the film!

She was married to designer Roger Furse for many years until they divorced. SHe assisted him on many of his productions and he painted her portrait that is on permanant display at the National Portrait Gallery in London. She remarried author Stephen Watts. But I have no idea where any of her sketches and paintings are located, it's typical with costume designers they are the neglected artists in the media.

Most of the costumes went back to Angels and Bermans (now just Angels, I think...near London) and are still probably warehoused for the most part. I know some of Bujold's gowns were used in a HORRIBLE film immediately afterwards called "CRY OF THE BANSHEE" and yet again (although re-worked and altered) in CARRY ON HENRY VIII. One of Anne's headdresses she wears at Penshurst appears now and then in other "Tudor" productions. I do not know if Universal showcases any of them in their studio tours in California...they should, as they won the Oscar in 1969.
