Burton Is The Handsomest Henry VIII Ever!

As I watch Burton in this role, I remember my grief at his passing when he was not quite 59. His eyes--so sad and gentle--and his voice--sonorous as a French horn and a trombone playing together--are totally unforgettable.

I love Richard Burton (particularly in 'Cleopatra'; very handsome!). Even though Burton died before I was born I still love him, although I'm not that keen on him dressed up as Henry VIII (not exactly a sexy role!)

i thought he was so ugly in that movie, i dont know what is so different between now and then except he has aged

That and, well you know, being dead. Not to be depressing or anything...

But honestly, Richard Burton was very nice in 'Cleopatra' with his Roman skirt.

I'll take Robert Shaw as Henry VIII in A Man For All Seasons. Delicious. Sexy. Red headed. Mighty.

I loved Robert Shaw's Henry too. Very sexy, and a perfect portrayal of the descriptions of Henry in his prime.

Burton and Shaw were great as Henry! But Burton was about the best actor I know of to never win an Oscar! Just outstanding and really sexy and magnetic in many a role....Burton is always so watchable. RIP, Dick!

reply

I agree that Shaw probably captured Henry's ruthlessness best, but both Burton and Shaw were WAY WAY WAY too handsome to be Henry. If you want to see the most perfect-looking Henry VIII ever filmed, see Charles Laughton in "The Private Life of Henry VIII" (1933) -- he looks absolutely identical to the paintings of Henry -- rather porcine, bloated, and truly icky.

Henry was described as very handsome in his youth. But yes he did get rather big as he aged.

As for Richard Burton. His Henry is terrific and extremely sexy.

Actually Ray Winstone who acted the role of Henry VIII in a TV movie of the same name (2003) looks more like the historical Henry VIII than any other actor I've seen in the role. He looks like the portraits and is the right physical type.

Ray Winstone is my #1 for the most unattractive Henry VIII.

reply

Well, the real Henry VIII was hardly love's young dream, either. He looked more like Ray Winstone than Jonathan Rhys-Myers, who was as unlike him physically as anyone could be.

"..sure you won't change your mind? Why, is there something wrong with the one I have?"

reply

Agreed. Shaw seemed more vital and ruthless, a bit mad, perhaps.

reply

I thought Ray Winstone was a sexy Henry VIII. I've loved ever since "Sexy Beast". There's just something about him.

reply

My vote for the handsomest Henry is a tie between Eric Bana and Jonathan Rhys meyers, though I have to add none of them physically suit the part of Henry lol.

reply

As a fan of the Tudors I do love Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but my favorite Henry has to be Ray Winstone. I just adore him in almost all of his roles, but him as Henry just made me swoon!

I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity

reply

Richard Burton was a handsome Henry VIII and although Erica Bana was not good in the role he did play a goodlooking Henry and atleast he had the body mass. Jonathan is just to small, petite and too much of a pretty boy.

Laughton looked so much like the paintings of Henry and his performance is BRILLIANT and I find him a sexy Henry too!

I think Burton's Henry is also a great performance and sexy! What a voice!

I think Keith Mitchell was the best, with Burton a close second. I also liked Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry although he didn't physically resemble him.

reply

Keith Michell is the best, although Richard Burton and Charles Laughton both come close. I never saw the Ray Winstone version so I am in no position to form an opinion. Jonathan Ryhs-Meyers is a cutie-pie but the wrong physical type, but he does display the appropriate air of "absolute power corrupts absolutely".

"Gomez, take those out of his mouth!"

reply

Nooo
he was handsome but not the most
for me the most Hnadsome is Eric Bana

this is my Rank
1 Eric Bana
2 Jonathan Rhys Meyers
3 Richard Burton

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is the sexiest Henry ever, IMO. His eyes are mesmerizing. You don't know if he wants to kill or have sex with someone... Or both.

What about Charlton Heston?
