Symbol on motorcycle helmets (and VW van?)

I saw this movie for the FIRST TIME (*gasp) the other night and was wondering what the symbol was that was all over the film. Perhaps I should be skooled on my lack of '60's counter-culture knowledge (Mr. Natural is rolling one in his grave...) but forgive me just this once.

The symbol is a yellow circle with an upside-down red triangle in the middle.

Anyone have a clue what that is/means/symbolizes/protests...

Much appreciated. The dump's closed so I gotta go find another place to unload this trash.

At one point in the film, they call it the symbol for the "Trinity Racing Association." It may have had some deeper metaphysical significance or whatever, but it was presented as just the logo they used to represent the Church crowd's team at the motorcycle races.
