James Mason's accent!

Whilst this is a "must watch" movie for those of a cinema-historical persuasion, I do find it annoying that the moment Mason's character sets foot in Oz, he drops the cut glass English accent he had in New York and adopts a rather poor caricature of an Australian one! From time to time it even turns into Brummie!

James Mason's accent often used to wander

I've only just started to watch this movie and his accent is annoying. After all he is supposed to be an English artist living in Australia.

He would have had to live there for a very long time to pick up the accent.

I'm of the impression, that he was from that area & moved back home. That's why he knew some of the locals. Also, someone there said "Hometown boy makes good!"
If he'd lived abroad for decades, his Aussie accent would be greatly softened. Actually, I caught him laying on the Aussie a bit thickly, @ times. For instance, when he was talking to the chicken he was about to cook. Then, he went back to sounding English.

Exactly! It wasn't a major issue for me.
