Did ethnic cleansing really happen in Mexico?

Did ''around the turn of the century'' the etnic cleansing (= whiping out a race of people) happen in reality in Mexico?
Or was it exaggerated for the sake of the movie script?

So less "ethnic cleansing" and more aggressive "career counseling".

Not quite. It was not exactly an ethnic cleansing. They did not kill or imprison Yaqui because they were Yaqui, but because they were pro-independence revolutionaries against Diaz (in the 1880). Most were not killed but sent to Yucatan as laborers, as someone else has said. The primarily native (Mestizos to be exact; a mix of native and ''white'', in the case of the majority of Mexico, more native than white - US calculations* of Mexican genetics (which put European ancestry at 58) are invalid because they never take into account the fact that Amerinds have some genetic markers the same as Europeans, and only count the ''Asian'' markers as ''native''... also problematic because there are Asian immigrants. Mexicans never committed a genocide against a native people comparable to that of the United States. Never did the Spanish, which is why Mestizos make up the vast majority of Mexicans (80%), followed by whites (10%) and natives (10% making the total percent of people of native ancestry around 90%; note that that is slightly less as many of the castizos (a mix of criollos and Mestizos) classify themselves as ''white'' due to the fact that is the greater part of their ancestry).

*The Mexican government-funded National Institute of Genetic Medicine (INMEGEN) study is more complete and actually Mexican, rather than American. They are more trustworthy than US studies, took into account more genetic markers, and despite their findings and area of research (genetics), were free of racism. The study showed that the Mestizo population in Mexico were on average 55% of indigenous ancestry followed by 41.8 % of European, 1.8% of African, and 1.2% of East Asian ancestry.
