Why is it not considered a classic?

It is in the same vein as The Wild Bunch or even The Professionals with Lee Marvin....its a very underrated period piece.

Good to hear, I’ll have to check this out at some point.

Maybe it will one day.

SIMPLE ANSWER...ITS ABOUT A POINT BELOW THOSE FILMS...ITS GOOD BUT NOT THAT GOOD.

MY RATINGS...

THE WILD BUNCH 9.5/10

THE PROFESSIONALS 8/10

100 RIFLES 6.5/10

Probably cause not enough people have seen it.

I think the Spanish location hurts it in relation to the authentic Mexican locations of The Wild Bunch and picturesque Nevada standing in for Mexico in The Professionals. Sam Peckinpah and Richard Brooks are also more proficient directors than Tom Gries. Also, Jim Brown and Burt Reynolds are good, but they aren't Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster, or William Holden and Ernest Borgnine.

If you guys like 100 Rifles, The Professionals, The Wild Bunch and other Mexico-set westerns, DEFINITELY check out "El Condor" with Jim Brown and Lee Van Cleef. I actually like that one just as much as I like The Wild Bunch.
