How Elmo ruined Sesame Street

Elmo used to be a small part of the PBS show’s large cast. "But at some point in the mid-’90s,” says Kevin Wong, "Elmo began to hog more and more real estate on the show.”

Keep it to yourself.

He was the reason I outgrew sesame street.

On the old Jump the Shark site, the majority felt that Elmo was the biggest cause of Sesame Street's shark jumping:

I agree whole-heartedly with this! When I started watching Sesame Street with my 2 year old I was excited sonceI had watched it. I barely recognized it. I kept asking, "Where are Bert and Ernie? Grover?" my daughter likes zelmo but her favorite is Cookie Monster. I have the toughest time finding just Cookie stuff!

reply

They're probably still on.

Expect them to be on every episode?

reply

No, but I was surprised at how much they had disappeared. Majority likes Elmo on almost every episode, apparently.

Many of the classic characters like Bert, Ernie, Big Bird and Grover still seem to appear quite prominently in the show's merchandising. I never really cared for Abby and Baby Bear though. I don't hate or dislike them per se, just not my top favorite characters.

I agree its all about Elmo now, it would not surprise me if they just re named the show elmo st! Elmo is to much in you face!

I grew up on Sesame Street in the early 70s so luckily there was no Elmo at that time. In my opinion Elmo ruined the show when he joined it in the 80s.

Great write-up in the link, OP. i totally agree with it. The time to do something was over 20 years ago. When the Elmo's World segment started, the damage was REALLY being done.

Well, this girl disagrees. He's actually one my favorites from Sesame Street. If anything, he was the best on the show along with Big Bird, Burt and Ernie, and the Cookie Monster.

Don't play games with a girl who can play better.

I'm glad you think so. I grew up with Elmo, Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Oscar, Grover, Count, and Cookie Monster. I would also like to add, that I don't have any issues with and I actually sort of like Zoe or Abby even though they are past my generation of Sesame Street.

Well, I guess because many of the muppeteers either died or moved onto the Muppet Show. Jim Henson, Richard Hunt, Jerry Nelson, all died. Frank Oz I guess doesn't do muppets any more. Carrol Spinney is like 300 years old. Sesame Workshop owns all rights to Sesame Street muppets, and Disney owns the muppets from the Muppet Show. Without Henson, Oz and the main players, the Muppets just aren't what they were. It's best to watch classic Sesame Street episodes on YouTube and remember how flippin' awesome they all were in their heyday!

Sesame Street classic was awesome. It taught kids it educated kids. It wasn't afraid to let us know that challenges and struggles occur in the world too. And that this is a normal healthy part of life. Learning how to deal with all of this is important.

Only being 'happy' all the time is not normal or reasonable. We do experience conflict, challenges and disappointment. Kids need to know what to appropriately do if and when they experience these situations.
