how old are those kids suppose to be.

I know they're in their teens but what age?

I know Fred is probably the oldest being about 16-18 since he drives that car
Shaggy= probably the youngest of the group around 13 or 14
Velma= probably 15
Daphanie =probably 15 or 16

reply

Uh.. Shaggy has a gotie and he looks like he's in his late teens and early 20's
Fred looks like he is 25
Daphne looks 19
Velma looks 17

They all looked like college kids than high schoolers

reply

This was how I always thought myself. To me the "meddling kids" characters always seemed to look like they were college aged. But I was born in the 90s.

People (including parents) i know who were kids in the 60s however have often told me they looked like then high school aged.

They're all supposed to be the same age, around 17 or so. They're classmates. That's how they know each other.

That doesn't mean too much, in some episode of Scooby doo that I remember seeing where they flashed back to Shaggy's early childhood, he had a goatee even as an infant. Funny as hell.

reply

The characters never struck me as teenagers. To me, they all looked more college-aged.

Respect what you have 🌌

reply

Don't most people start college at 18 or 19? That would make them late teens.

"Life is like a box of Krispy Kreme donuts".

reply

Shaggy and Fred are old guys. They probably had to repeat a few years. Then they lured Velma and Daphne into the van and they drove away from the college and never returned.... Ruh-Roh

reply

While later series and versions of the characters play fast and loose with their ages, in the original series bible for this first series, Fred and Shaggy are 17, Daphne is 16, and Velma is 15.

reply

I always assumed they were college-aged - around 19 or 20.

Them being in high school made no sense to me.

reply

Well they are based on characters from The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis so my guess is about the same age as those characters.

reply

i thought something around college years. but hey your guess be as good as mine..

reply

I gotta say though I like this show, if the writers wanted the characters to be in highschool they did a bad job of portraying it. You never have even one episode where they mention they go to school. Or no line ever of, "We need to get home so I can do my homework." Or one of them complaining about a teacher they have. In fact with them doing things like going on far away trips to Canada, China, and the Hemelayas by themselves, it is rather baffling for them to be highschool age.

reply

it was made in 1969--so most of them (with the exception of shaggy) are 'dressed up' the girls are not wearing pants.

But with all the running etc around they do the clothes would get dirty/torn, not very practical re sleuthing. All of them would be in jeans sneakers and t-shirts today. It would then be far easier for modern audiences to immediately guess they were 'kids'.

It was shown on network mornings when i was a little kid in the 80's but am assuming that the 'age' of the dress is why it's not anymore.

reply

I didn't even mention their clothes. I more mentioned that even in 1969 it would be odd for parents to allow their underage kids to go on trips to other countries by themselves. Especially with members of the opposite sex.

reply

True and no mention of where they sleep/sleeping arrangements (the van?). I can't imagine how that passed the network even at the time.

reply

I'm watching an episode from season 2 and they're organizing a "school dance".

reply

Yeah. In the episode with the Creeper. But that could just as well be college kids having a party. But even with that, there are things that make it seem they are not underage like going to other countries by themselves with no other adult going with them. I don't think even in 1969 people under age 18 could go to other countries by themselves.

reply

I always thought they were at least 18/19, but I don't think they would've called it a "school dance" if they were college age. As strange as it is, I really do think they're supposed to be in high school. But I can't make it work in my head either.

reply

In Scooby Doo: Where Are You?, their ages were as follows. Freddie & Shaggy are 17. Daphne is 16. Velma is 15.
