The Films

Does anyone know why the buses were different in the films than in the t.v series?

reply

I wondered about this. maybe the filming location contracts etc were different for the films than the series?
The series used green Bristol lodekkas, the company was luxton traction company.
The films used red London transport type RT's, the company called "town and district"

The answer given to me by none other than On The Buses co-creator Ronald Wolfe is as follows:-

Prior to the TV series going into production,Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney approached London Transport about using their buses when making On The Buses.London Transport refused to give their consent as they felt the show would give bad publicity and show their employees in a bad light so they went to Eastern National (who operated their green buses out of the Wood Green depot) and Eastern National were delighted to be involved giving their permission hence the green buses in the TV Series.

By the time the first On The Buses film went into production in 1971,On The Buses was a smash hit sitcom and prior to that film,London Transport wrote a letter to Wolfe and Chesney and stated they wanted to play a part in the making of the films and in return for the use of their buses they'd offer the use of their skidpan at Chiswick during the making of the film. This deal was accepted hence the red buses used in the films. The difference in bus company names was perhaps decided upon to explain away the different livery.

The film "Holiday on the buses" was filmed at a Pontin's Holiday Camp in Prestatyn, in Wales, which is about an hour and a bit away from where i live, I think the camp is called Butlin's now but they've put up a plaque saying that the film was filmed there!

SPIDER PIG!! Loving the simpsons movie!

Pontins at Prestatyn is still a Pontins. One of seven remaining Pontins in the UK.

One thing that has always stuck in my mind is the scene where Olive's suitacases/bags go in the water over the bridge - this is the village of Rhuddlan (Rhuddlan castle is in the background) and isn't actually on the way to Prestatyn from the south [unless they take the scenic route. :-) ]. It's only about 5 miles aways though.

I went on holiday to Sun Valley holiday camp Rhuddlan a few hundred yards from the castle down the river for a decade+, but that was a while ago. I always have had an affinity with this film and also my dad worked on the buses during this period too. Hapyp days. :-)

In the first and third series, the buses were grey - but then, so was the whole of the fictional town of Luxton, as the series was in black and white.

The reason why most of the third series (seven episodes) was in black-and-white was due to the "colour strike" - it's reflected on the DVDs, too.

With regard to Butlins and Pontins - I think there's only one Butlins left - Minehead in Somerset - known as Somerwest World - they used to be all over the country - Filey in Yorkshire, Skegness, Bognor Regis, wasn't there one in Rhyl or Llandudno - I think there was one in Kent or Essex or somewhere down that way - and one in the Irish Republic - now there's just Minehead.

Most of the holiday camps that are more-or-less clones of Butlins and Pontins are not in major resorts like Blackpool or Brighton - the nearest Haven Holidays place to where I live (Taunton in Somerset) is at Doniford Bay, near Watchet - a very small place.

There are 3 Butlins left, Bonor Regis, Minehead and Skegness and 6 Pontins at Brean Sands in Somerset, Camber Sands in Sussex, Pakefield in Suffolk, Southport, Prestatyn and Blackpool.

I just checked my two series 3 discs of On The Buses and all the eisodes were in colour... However, they were produced in 1970, and according to the info on the Bless This House inside covers of the DVDs the "colour strike" was in 1971, which was the year Bless This House was first produced (or at least aired, it is possible that they were produced in 1970) and almost all of season one of the Sid James vehicle was in black and white.

I dont have series 4 of On The Buses as of yet, so perhaps seven of the season 4 episodes are in black and white due to the "colour strike"?

Yes, it is some of the series 4 episodes which are B/W, not series 3.

Series 1 & 2 were in B/W by original intent.
Series 3 saw the change to color, and were shot entirely in color.
Series 4 was intended to follow suit, but the strike resulted in some episodes being shot only in B/W.
Series 5 onward were fully color again.

I guess a lot of people don't really think they are quite as good as the show. I personally really like the films especially Holiday on the Buses. I'll go as far as saying that they're probably amongst the most successful transition a British sitcom made to the big screen.
