Has Monty Python's Flying Circus ever taught you something?

Has Monty Python's Flying Circus ever taught you something you used in real life?

I was in World History class in the 10th grade in high school. The teacher asked if anyone knew who invented the hot air balloon. Because of Monty Python's Flying Circus, I knew the Montgolfier brothers invented the fire balloon.

That's twice British TV taught me something I used in school. The Five Doctors on Doctor Who taught me the definition of Pi.

I told my history teacher that Louis XVI had better things to do than go around all day remembering his bloody number.

I learned the Magna Carta was a document signed at Runnymede in 1215 by King John pledging independence to the English barons rather than a piece of chewing gum on a bedspread in Dorset.

reply

It taught me there is such a thing AS Basingstoke. Being an American fan, I'd never heard of it before.

reply

Nor had I!

reply

Since they were obviously pointing out Basingstoke isn't in Westphalia, I had to look it up to see where it actually was back in 1994 when I first saw the episode. I had never seen that episode before, even going back to PBS in 1985. I never saw it until it aired in Comedy Central's package.

reply
