Stringbean

I'm watching Hee Haw on CMT and they just showed Grandpa Jones sitting on a dock with Stringbean.

Now I've heard about what happened to Stringbean, so I immediately thought, well, this episode obviously came about before 1973.

I'm almost 41 and I have faint memories of Stringbean anyway, as well as hearing about him before and after his death.

But wasn't Stringbean the scarecrow who had the crow puppet sitting on his shoulder during the cornfield joke bits?

reply

Yes that was Stringbean that was the scarecrow, after his death, his scarecrow character was never replaced.

reply

String used to carry around outrageous amounts of money on himself. He never trusted banks after members of his family lost their money deposited in them during the depression. This likely lead to his murder.

reply

The thugs who murdered him were eventually brought to justice. There was an episode of "City Confidential" about it.

I watched it a few months back. Bless his heart :(

Come on, Franklin! It'll be a fun trip!

gotta love the American justice system...there're "drug dealers" that'll never taste freedom, but a double muderer gets to eat a Whopper w/Cheese...

**this head movie makes my eyes rain...waaaaa **

Yes he was the scarecrow but I think his most popular bit on the show was his "letter from home" where he sits with the cast and announces he got a new letter in the mail from the folks back home (which he later reads) announcing "I've got it next to my heart" and then then pads down his body trying to find it saying "heart...heart...heart" starting at his heart but ending and always finding it next to his ass in his back pocket. I always though that was the funniest repeated gag in the whole series. Stringbean was one of the veteran country music performers that HEE HAW really made famous; for decades he had been an Opry star and a minor recording artist but this show made him, Junior Samples, Archie Campbell, and Grandpa Jones super famous for the first time (Minnie Pearl was already a legend and had widely appeared on television at that point.)
