John Cassavettes, Peter Falk and Ben Gazarra were they really drunk?

I saw the 70-71 show where the three actors were promoting Cassavettes new movie Husbands and they appeared to be very drunk on the show. But I'm wondering if anyone knows if this was an act or not?

reply

Apparently they had been drinking, but Falk and Gazzara took their cues from Cassavettes, who told his friends to follow his lead. Once they sobered up, Cassavettes sent a note of apology to Cavett on behalf of the three of them. Ben Gazzara was a guest several times following that incident, but I'm not certain about the other two actors.

reply

I wasn't aware of the note of apology, but it was certainly needed. They behaved rather badly. If one is going to show up for an interview, at least one should behave and not be drunk. They were acting like a bunch of asses, and it sort of ruined the interview.

Back then they were alound to smoke and drink booze on TV. I just saw the Robert Mitchum segment and he smoked and drank scotch It looked like.

reply

Yes, apparently the drinking was a cover for their antics.

I'd love it if whoever has a link or a copy they could send (I'd pay!) along to reply here or e-mail me...

Thanks,

I just saw this today, and I don't think they were drunk. Yes, they may have been drinking, but not enough to act out. It just looked to me like three guys who didn't really want to be on the show messing with Cavett the same way a bunch of dumb jocks would mess around with a nerd. You can tell because after the third break they suddenly became overly serious, reportedly because they were yelled at by their producer at some point to cut it out.
