RIP: Producer Lowell Thomas Jr. dies at 92

Former Lt. Governor Lowell Thomas Jr. has died

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Former Alaska Lieutenant Governor Lowell Thomas Jr. has passed away just five days before turning 93. Thomas was born in London on Oct. 6, 1923 to radio broadcaster Lowell Jackson Thomas and Frances Ryan Thomas.

Before serving as Lieutenant Governor under Bill Hammond between 1974 and 1978 Thomas was a flight instructor during World War II, serving with the Army Air Corps. He moved to Alaska in 1960, just two years after visiting the state. He then served 12 years with the Alaska Senate before working under the Hammond Administration.

Current Alaska governor Bill Walker ordered all state flags to be lowered immediately and not return to full-staff until sunset on October 7th.

“Lowell Thomas embodied the adventurous spirit and passion that are uniquely Alaskan,” said Governor Walker. “His commitment to conservation issues and public service will be remembered by many. Lieutenant Governor Mallott and I extend our most sincere condolences to the Thomas family, and those across the state who knew and admired Lieutenant Governor Thomas,” said Governor Walker.
