reply

Maybe they had central air and you couldn't see it? Who cares?

I didn't see a furnace on the Newhart show in Vermont but they seemed to do OK.

reply

Most episodes occurred during the school year, so they never addressed what the Beadys did during summer. Except the vacation episodes but those could have happened during spring break.

It aired from 1969 to 1974. In 1975, only about a quarter of American homes had AC. No one would have expected them to have it. It was on uncommon luxury. We lived without it fine.

reply

Exactly. I thought his question was weird...

reply

They lived in a upper middle class house and had a maid...they had AC.

reply

They lived in SoCal. It doesn't get that hot that an AC is necessary. I never had one.

reply

True, they struck me as living on the westside, not the valleys, where it can be a difference of 10 to 20 degrees F...

reply

Back then people seemed to survive without air conditioning.

reply

I thought the AC invention saved mankind from extinction

reply

I wouldn't go that far. People were more hearty back then.

reply

I heard the AC was created by an African American slave in the South and it saved many from dying of heat exhaustion. Then the white man took credit for the new invention

reply

Weird

Correct. That was my great grandaddy Rufus "Chill" Washington (son of a slave). The man just couldn't stand the heat. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. Everyone just told him "Chill, move north where it's cool", but he was a stubborn cuss.

reply

Was central a/c around then? Even if the rest of the house had it, I doubt the attic would have had it. It must have been really hot up there.

reply

If it got too hot they just locked themselves in Sam's freezer.

reply

The bigger issue is they have no toilet for 8 people.

By the 1960s, most new homes in the United States were built with central air conditioning.
