mike had to make great money

ok

arichtecht 1 income for 6 kids, his wife, paid the maid, groceries

ridicolous

reply

Even as a kid I thought that. He did work from home though which is a sign he had a great deal of influence/stature in his profession. Maybe he had some big contracts.

reply

I suspect he had some dirt on Mr. Phillips and blackmailed him for a promotion and additional perks (such as working from home whenever he wanted).

reply

Mike Brady always came off as a blackmailer. It was so obvious.

reply

LOL.

reply

He worked in an office, only shown a few times, but just worked at home occasionally in the evenings.

..1 income for 6 kids..

I'm from a family of 6, and my dad worked and mom stayed home. We lived in our own home in the suburbs.

But realize that the cost of big expenditures like homes is based on available money. Once women entered the workforce in much greater numbers, the household money available to purchase a home went up considerably, and so did the price of homes.

A good architect can make a lot of money. Especially after he makes partner. I know in "The Bradys" Mike had taken over the firm. Did he ever make partner in the show?

reply

Cost of living was much cheaper back then. Reagan messed things up---forgot that yes people were taxed more, but it balanced out because a home was affordable even w one parent, LOTS of kids and war going on.

Carol had either child support or AFDC (which in those days was VERY easy to obtain) for her and her girls. Women were not supposed to work if single and with children and white. AFDC was began under the very idea a woman SHOULD stay at home with her children and take care of them. The government would instead be the 'breadwinner'

Once Carol married Mike either the child support/ AFDC payments stopped regardless.

It's not uncommon to have large families in the past and even today even when you're not rich and still able to provide for all of them.

reply

Uncommon to have large families? It was very common. My parent's had 4 and would have had a fifth if mom hadn't miscarried and needed a hysterectomy.

Our neighbor across the street had 11. My dad's parents had 7. In my high school I knew at least 15 kids who had 5 or more siblings.

In previous centuries multiple children was the norm; partly because children could work once they hit 6 or 7 and partly because infant and child mortality was higher.

It is far more fashionable today to have only one or two children.

There was a missing word there that I edited

Just saw this. No problem and my apologies. It is so easy to drop a word that changes the entire meaning of a sentence. We're good.

reply

Carol likely had an income too. Either child support (if divorced) or life insurance (if widowed).

reply

Plus, she was a hooker!
