The kids holding onto the staircase railings when using the stairs

It's such a PSA on safety I think.
It used to annoy me because only old people use stair railings on staircases in reality.
Although I admit it does look like quite a dangerous staircase

reply

I usually hold on to the railing on and off as I go up and down and I'm not old.

I don't think reality applies really though, ppl also don't have to have the lights on to talk to each other in bed at night.

Create a society in which you would like to live, not knowing what you're going to come into it as.

reply

My kids grew up in Base housing with 'industrial strength' railings on the staircase... now I'm realizing that they developed the habit of not just using the rail, but of leaning heavily on that rail. Unfortunately, we live in a house with a more 'decorative' railing now.

reply

It was probably an insurance issue. Sometimes they flew down those stairs. When they boys would sometimes jump the last few, I'll bet their accounting people cringed.

There was an episode when Tiger runs away and the family drives all over town looking for him. There is a scene where Mike and Bobby arrive home after scouting around and they show a specific close-up of Bobby unbuckling his seat belt. Talk about hitting you over the head with a PSA!

reply

I hated watching Batman on TV because they made a huge deal of wearing seat belts.

reply

That was almost 20 years before New York State passed the first U.S. seat belt law in 1984.

reply

They should also make a law that everyone has to carry an aerosol can of shark repellent too.

reply

Yeah look that's definitely a more blatant example of a PSA.
The smoking episode was screaming PSA probably.

I noticed it was blatant when Mike was teaching Bobbie about stranger danger at the front door when Mike and Carol were about to go to dinner and Marcia and Greg were babysitting them.

I love when Alice tells Bobby to go do his homework (or whatever), and Mike is outside making "evil witch" voices. Alice opens the door and Mike is all embarrassed, and when he bumbles his way through why he was talking like that, he says, "It's kind of funny when you think about it." Alice, completely deadpan, replies, "Hilarious."

reply

I wished that Marcia would have been the president of the Jim Morrison fan club and that he would have still been alive and visited the show. Any hint of PSA's would have been killed forever in that episode.

reply

I always wished that one of the older Brady kids had a regular, steady boyfriend/girlfriend that lasted more than 1 episode.

> I always wished that one of the older Brady kids had a regular, steady boyfriend/girlfriend that lasted more than 1 episode

That would have been cool.

reply

Jim Morrison was much too edgy for The Bunch. Most rock singers of that era were. With all due respect, Davy Jones was more of a pop singer.

Is it a coincidence that you mentioned Jim Morrison? Britt Leach played Davy Jones' manager in that Brady Bunch episode. And Leach once shared an apartment with Morrison and Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

I usually try not to hold onto handrails because they have a ton of germs.

reply

I don't think there is anything wrong with holding handrails while coming down the stairs. What a silly thing to complain about or even notice. I not only hold handrails, I usually tether myself to them and wrap both of my arms around them in a locked stance as I come down any set of steps so as to stay safe and alive.

reply

As do I. I've fallen on my stairs twice and broke my leg once. So now I hold on to the bannister and take baby steps all the time.

reply

I use the hand rails when traversing the stairs at home and at work.

Maybe I should thank the Brady Bunch and Paramount for a masterful job of social engineering.

reply

Ah, yes, but have you ever broken your foot going UP the steps, or a mountain?!? Yep, guilty of both... I'm just graceful like that.

reply

JIm Morrison MAY have gone much more well with The Partridges.(Only they'd have to finally throw him out!)

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

reply

Off camera, David Cassidy was a lot like Jim Morrison.

reply

The seat belts were the Ralph Nader buckles in Fords.

reply

Yeah I remember the seatbelt unbuckle for sure, that was cringeworthy!

reply

I would of slid down the bannister.

reply

Me too! Hahaha!

reply

Bobby did that in the "Most Popular Girl" episode. Jan was telling him she got nominated as he was sliding down.

"Soft Kitty, Warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy Kitty, sleepy kitty purr purr purr!"

I hope Henahey41 is still around, 7 years later, to learn this valuable English lesson.

reply

Unlikely, since I doubt many people who posted years ago on IMDB are coming here to check for responses. But I'm keeping it as a lesson for all you meddling kids! (Oops, wrong show).

reply

I'm just guessing that they were told to hold the railing in an effort to restrain the typical childhood way of climbing stairs: going as fast as you can, with your head down in a "CHARGE!" position.

reply

Kids aren't afraid of anything. They ride bicycles with no hands. At least I did, but now, I hold onto stair railings, for fear that I might slip and fall.

reply

Is falling down the stairs more dangerous than all the germs your hands can pick up from a railing?

reply

Good Point.

reply

To the OP "baby" :

My parents taught us to always use the hand rail when
we went up & down stairs. Not just in the home but "anywhere."

You're thought that kids don't use hand rails is just an opinion.
Good parents teach their kids saftey and (most) kids do their best to follow the rule(s).

Not awlays of course. 

As an example, I forgot to use a hand rail back in our old home in Pennsylvania (this is in like 1975), when taking some of my board games, down the steps, back to the basement.

Well,I cettainly got a lesson! 

I was holding the games in both arms. I thought I could simply go down them with
no problem but...I took one mis-step and *painfully* tumbled down the steps to the "Cement" basement floor.

These stairs were not carpeted either,
they were made of tile & metal frame! OUCH! 

From that point on and still today, even on an escalator, I use the rail.

**As for the brady kids, yes ,it would've been a bad example for children watching the show to see the kids just run down those stairs and not use the rail. The step "slats" are open underneath and that's really dangerous, where kids are concerned.

P.S. - What's wrong the Public Service Anouncements? Do you think it's better we go
through life ignorant & stupid and doing anything or everything we please without thinking about it? 

Okay cool thanks for that great story.....

I wouldn't know what to teach a child; as I'm happily and thankfully not a parent at this stage of my life. And I can't remember the last time I saw a PSA on Australian Tv. We used to get taught these life lessons in School not during television hours.

"And I'm wearing a tuxedo for no apparent reason."

If we lived in that house, I would TOTALLY hold onto that banister going down, THOSE stairs are like our basement stairs, just boards with gaps in between, and NO railing, as a kid I was always TERRIFIED of going down those steps, because in my 5-6 year old mind I can see me slipping and falling through one of the gaps and winding up UNDER the stairs with no way out. And I STILL am leery going up and down them, though I quit holding onto the walls for support when I was a kid.

reply

Taht actually made you a very sensible & cautious kid. 

I was ususally (and amazingly) for my age 'cautious' but jus tthat one time ,I really didn't stop to think about the safety risk in carrying things & blocking my own view.

It took me years to learn to ride an escalator(like in the mall say) and for a long time , I used it pretty easily. Now ,I've turned cautious again...I guess because I don't wish to risk it. I ride them but only if they have a wall on either side.

What's interesting about those stairs is that when HGTV madeover the Brady house to resemble the sound-stage set in 2019, those "open" stairs were no longer permissible under local building codes. They had to build them with the backing.

reply

and in reality, all these old people actually MAKE it down the stairs safely.

seriously, the way people move down the stairs lately -- pushing, shoving past you, running like their hair is on fire, not paying attention to themselves or their environment and too busy on their dick phones... [need I go on?] is really scary.

that is what it is, scary.

one more person shoves past me while running DOWN the MOVING ESCALATOR gets to trip over my foot and go flying into oblivion!!

Loved your post!

I work in a building that shares space with a call center. So, every morning, as I'm arriving to work, there's always several people from that call center that are running late. Usually, the same people.

They drive recklessly through the parking lot, parking where their car comes to a stop and then waddle (yes, waddle) into the building pushing through every poor rube that has the misfortune of standing between them and... the elevator.

Now, this where I get my revenge. While they're waiting for the elevator to take them to the third floor, I always casually pass them and take the stairs... pushing the elevator button on the SECOND floor. Then I stand back and watch them all pile out of the elevator, unaware that it's the SECOND floor. They usually realize their error just after the elevator door closes and they have to wait for it to come back. The looks on their faces at this point is priceless... and it usually happens several times a week!

^Love it!

Elevators, you'll never catch me in one of those, I've never been on one, and I don't plan to either.

I guess we won't be seeing you enjoying the view atop the CN Tower, Space Needle, Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower, or 1000 other viewpoints?
