1968 Groceries

Holy cow...4 overloaded carts of groceries, including 20 quarts of milk, $126...

reply

They might have been shopping at the commissary which would have been more economical.

I'm watching this now on TCM and I was thinking the same thing about the total $126 and change. I also noticed in that same scene in the market the cashier tells some stock boy to help out and Lucy hands him something; the stock boy looks like a young Robert DeNiro. Its like split second but looks like him.

You have to adjust for inflation. That's $872 in 2016 dollars.

1961 groceries. Filmed in 1967/8, story takes place in 1961.

Yeah, well, those were the days when a nurse and a military officer could afford a huge Victorian house with 10+ bedrooms in San Francisco.

What would that house be worth today - $10 mil?

reply

It was a commissary. When the father is with his friend in the car & they see her on the street he says something like "I bumped into her at the commissary"

reply

I was waiting how low the total was going to come out to be ignoring inflation. :-)

reply

I can barely fill one bag of groceries these days for $126.
