Ending: Off to war

I found the movie kinda sweet and entertaining. But the ending where the Tim Matheson character strolls off to Marine training and presumably then off to war with his smiling family looking on amazed me. This was 1968. There must have been hint that Viet Nam was not going as planned. I know the movie is just bubble gum but the ending just seemed so oblivious to reality.
