This movie is an ICON that CANNOT be remade!
There is no point whatever in remaking this movie. It is an artistic icon and symbol of the achievements and art of the period it was produced in.
This movie was not meant for three dimensions.
The whole purpose of this movie is in its original, two dimensional form. The entire ART of the movie comes from the images psychedelic pop-art style - the two-dimensional renderings of smoke, water, landscapes and crowds are capable of suggesting a realness of their own. That is the main reason that this movie cannot be made in three dimensions, because it completely defeats the stylistic intentions of the original!
Some people are under the mistaken impression that CGI is more "real," and therefore more "superior to anything hand-drawn or two dimensional. They are wrong on both counts. Being three dimensional does NOT make art superior, it only makes it dependent on reality. Animation is not supposed to look "realistic" in terms of the physical world, it is supposed to create a realism, of its own, a world that depends on THAT realism, and the motion capture process TOTALLY defeats this endeavor.
How can any person compare the monumental artistic effort it took to render, BY HAND, the sea of holes, the color changes, the effects, and everything about the original, with something that just records live action movements?
Even more than that, this movie and its art are a product of their OWN time! To translate them into this time and this technology, they can NEVER have the impact they did in the sixties! In its own time, this movie was an artistic and humanistic milestone, but today it would be nothing more than yet another CGI special effects laden adventure film.
Anyone who fully appreciates this movie MUST be able to see this!
