How come I never heard a this?

I'm a big western fan and just now saw this tonight, wow pretty darn good. I thought it would end up being some stereotypical 50's type western with clean cut cow hands and the typical Heston over-acting but it's far from it. Heston acted his butt off in this and the film had that good ole man with no outlaw feel too it. It's like Josey Wales meets Shane. The only problem with the film is that it lacks the quick draw gunslinger type shootouts that you'd expect. But that wasn't really needed at all and just added to the realism. The ending got me downa bit but hey, Will Penny tells it and lives it like it is.

Yeah, it's a very underrated and somewhat unknown movie, but it's great. I don't think it's a problem that the movie doesn't have quick draw gunslinger shootouts, it wasn't that kind of movie.

I'm always glad wnen someone discovers a gem like this. It seldom gets mentioned with the all time great westerns, but it deserves to be.

Seriously, I've seen a lot of westerns and have dug around for a bunch or weird ones from the ox bow incident to monte walsh, my name is nobody, a fist full of dynamite etc. lol and this is practically the last one I've found lol. I love this film because it's so realistic. The ending isn't a fairytale and that's what's great about it, and probably what kept it hidden from existence in way. It's right up there with high noon, shane, and hang 'em high for me. Those films seem to tackle what most westerns don't.

^^ Unfortunately, many people unfairly think less of Charlton Heston's film resume because of his personal politics. This movie is so rarely on any of the Western channels.

Yes this is one of my favorites. At the core of this movie is love lost. This is not your typical oater. A strong cast did not hurt this movie either.

I agree 100%, a superb movie.

"Typical Heston over-acting"

Typical incorrect response to Heston by someone who doesn't like Heston's politics, or receives what he knows from others who don't like Heston's politics.
