Worst "hero" in the history of Westerns?

So when a group of 3 murderous rapist goons and their crazed daughter invade your home, what do you do? You run away, while you telling your woman, "I'm going to leave now. They won't be easy on you."
Seriously, why didn't Will's plan involve sending Cath or Horace for help and dealing with the gang himself?
Has there ever been a hero in any other movie who let the women and children fend off the bad guys while he himself rides safely away for help??

Will was making the best of the situation - he knew it would be dangerous for Cath, but he had to get out of there and get reinforcements/guns. Sending Horace wouldn't work for obvious reasons. Sending Cath would be almost as bad because she wouldn't know where to find help, and it would have been a lethal situation for Will once the crazies found out he had "sprung" Cath. Plus, they would have easily caught up with her, with dire consequences to follow.

He did the best thing possible.
