In retrospect, Mary Tyler Moore was perfect for a film about compulsive happiness. Mary Richards not only turned the world on with her smile, but always seemed to be trying to shame others into smiling. Remember how poor Loretta Kuehne was shamed into apologizing for her self-pity? Remember the birthday party Lou Grant distinctly said he didn't want? Both Loretta and Lou were separated from their spouses and may have smiled more in happier times, but the virus in this movie seemed to have a "mission" much like that of Miss Richards.
