Should one read the book first

Great movie? Great book? Whichever one you consume second will be ruined slightly by having the surprises taken out....would you recommend to read the book first or watch the film first?

I'm guessing watching the film first would ruin less, because there's still plenty of added philosophy in the book....but the details of the book may become a bit more boring if you already know what's going to happen...and that means spending 100's of hours reading a book that you already know how it's going to end.

I think if you're going to read the book, you should do it first. Just be prepared to wait a while before you can watch the film. I started reading in December and only finished a few weeks ago. So far I've watched the first two parts of the film, with '1812' up next.

I more than suggest reading the book before viewing the movie. As many virtues as this film adaption has, the book is so full and rich with detail, explanations and elaborations on events, characters and historical context that simply could not be translated literally on-screen.
My viewing experience was enhanced exponentially having experienced (and yes the book is quite an experience!) the complete novel beforehand. Having already spent a substantial amount of time with the characters in my mind, finally getting to see them come to life on screen felt more like a delayed and hlorious reunion than simply watching a movie.

The movie will in no way explain the book. It will just ruin many of the important scenes. I would suggest either reading the book or listening to the audio book (both are free on the web). Do that first and then watch the movie because they do a real good job of putting images to the book. You would want to read(or hear) the book first because Tolstoy is such an incredible writer. The way he explains some things in the book are the reason the book is so popular. His commentaries on war and human nature are very good and you will probably reflect on some of those things as you watch the movie
